Top 5 Reasons Why Kids Can Benefit from BJJ

Top 5 Reasons Why Getting Kids Can Benefit from BJJ

There is so much activities that we can have our kids indulge these days. Modern life has made it very convenient for anyone who enjoys the occasional distractions this goes the same for our kids. Why not get them into sports for a change. After all, the old approach to raising your kids is also the best way. I, for one, am a big fan of BJJ as being awesome for kids.

Reason #1: Kids need goals.

Yes. You heard it. Starting them young and teach them how to set goals for themselves. Trust me, you will thank us in the future. The entire structure of BJJ is centered towards multiple set of goals presented over a period of a student's growth. Setting up our kids to appreciate goals will teach to strive further!

Reason #2: BJJ is a safe form of martial arts

Yes. BJJ also known as a gentle art is as safe as it could be. I have yet to see a kid lose an eye. Believe it. It's true. Aside from safety standards set by BJJ schools in the United States, instructors take the best measures in making sure that the environment is safe enough for both instructors and students. Although, let me remind you that not all schools are lead, created the same. In my future articles, I will show you a definitive guide in choosing the best schools for your kids.

Reason #3: Competition is healthy

We all love to compete. Human beings are hardwired to best another. however, in BJJ, there is no such thing as losing. Kids will learn the valuable lesson of winning; that there is always grace in winning. And in losing; where there is no such thing, only learningg.

Reason #4: BJJ teaches discipline

Discipline distinguishes successful people from the mediocre stock. It is discipline that determines a person's value. What does BJJ have to do with it? Quite a lot. BJJ teaches discipline. A disciplined instructor, BJJ professor produces disciplined students. Trust me. This will go a long way for every student.

Reason #5: BJJ is healthy.

here are countless studies that provide concrete evidence that physical activity has numerous health benefit. Why not choose an activity for those young ones that is more fun and interactive. Play actually actually ends between the age of 10 to 12. During this period, a kid will then establish his liking to physical activities. Keeping them physically active is the key to a healthy lifestyle.

Meet Daniella! A fearless young woman training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu!

Dani when she started Jiu Jitsu at age 7

Dani when she started Jiu Jitsu at age 7

Let me tell you a story about a little girl named Daniella.  I met her a couple years ago when she was 7 and started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Pacific Top Team in Corona.  Now 2.5 years later, she’s 9 and still training. She is the smallest child in our Teens Class. She trains with everyone and isn’t afraid of their size or gender. These last few weeks I’ve been watching Daniella a lot on the mats. We have had a lot of newer kids join us these last few weeks. A lot of boys, all of them bigger than Daniella. She never hesitates with them. Never shows she is afraid or even nervous. She is focused, determined and confident in her skills she has gained over the last 2.5 years of training. She is in complete control, all while being a good training partner and humble in her success. She believes in her Jiu Jitsu. She believes in herself. Jiu Jitsu has given her the confidence that no matter your age, size or gender you are in control of yourself. So proud of this fearless young lady!

How Jiu Jitsu Helps your Child's overall Athleticism

Kids can begin training Jiu Jitsu as early as 3 years old at Pacific Top Team Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Corona. Having your child begin Jiu Jitsu at such a young age will definitely give them a jump start in their athleticism. Promoting active kids is an important aspect of their development and promotes a healthy lifestyle early on. Most kids try many different sports in their lifetime, but Jiu Jitsu makes a great compliment to any other activity. Jiu Jitsu increases body awareness and movement, increases strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health in kids.

At Pacific Top Team we have our kids program broken up into 4 age groups so all the kids get the best training with kids of similar physical abilities. Tiny Ninjas is for kids ages 3-4, Little Ninjas for 5-6 year olds, Junior for 7-9 years old and Teens for ages 10+

We love to hear directly from our kids how Jiu Jitsu has had a positive affect on their lives. A common answer we hear is how it has increased their confidence and given them skills to stand up to bullies. Recently one of our Little Ninjas, Hayden who has been training for about 6 months has also started to play baseball. He hit a home run at one of his first games of the season and was excited to come and tell us about it.

"Guess What Coach Kim!! I got a home run at my Baseball Game!  And Jiu Jitsu Helped me get it! You know why?  Because Jiu Jitsu has made me Strong!!"

Super Congrats on your recent Home run Hayden!! We love to see you being successful in all areas of your life!!

5 Reasons Your Child Should be training Jiu Jitsu

Kids enjoying a special class with Red Belt GrandMaster Francisco Mansor

Kids enjoying a special class with Red Belt GrandMaster Francisco Mansor

Many People don't know what Jiu Jitsu is. To the untrained eye, it looks like wrestling, but there are so many great reason every child should be involved in training this amazing sport. Here are 5!

1. Focus and Discipline-So many kids today have trouble focusing and being disciplined. There are so many outside things that are always distracting us. But just like muscles in our body that need to be trained to become strong, we need to train ourselves to be more focused and more disciplined. Jiu Jitsu is a super fun sport, but the techniques are very detailed oriented and can be complicated to learn and execute. It typically takes learning the same techniques many times before you start to understand and retain it. Kids have to pay attention to be successful.  This helps them to build their discipline and focus and will translate into other areas of their lives. You will see your child start to produce better grades, have better relationships and overall a better quality of life.

2. Socialization-Many kids are shy and have a hard time interacting with kids at school.  Some kids need to have a set of friends outside of school that they are able to bond with. Jiu Jitsu helps shy kids or just kids in general make new friends that they share a common interest with. Jiu Jitsu helps you work on your communication skills as well and we all know good communication skills are invaluable to have in life.

3. Coordination and Body Awareness-Jiu Jitsu makes you learn how to move your body in new ways you never have before. In kids it forces them to use many fine motor skills they may never uses. It teaching them balance and overall body awareness that will help them be successful In any physical activity they chose to do later on. It's amazing the coordination skills a 5 year old that has trained Jiu Jitsu for a year has compared to a new student coming in.

4. Fitness-Jiu Jitsu is a full body activity which focuses a lot on core strength. In my opinion it is the most fun activity that will keep you in the best shape while having tons of fun.  Kids don't even realize they are exercising!

5. Confidence/Antibully-Sadly Bullying is something that is so prevelant in kids today. But the great news in the #1 deterrent to being the target of a bully is to exhibit a lot of confidence.  Jiu Jitsu helps you build confidence because you learn different techniques and practice them in a "live" environment. Classes are structured where you learn a technique and practice with your partner. At the end of class, we have training time where your partner is now not going to let you do the technique. Truly knowing a technique it being able to implement it in this "live" setting. Once you begin to have success in sparring and you see that the techniques you have learned work no matter your size or strength and you gain confidence that is hard to get anywhere else. A more confident child=less problems with bullies!!!
