Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Helps Teens Lose Weight

Keeping your child healthy and active is a struggle that every parent faces. This compounded with so many addiative in our food, obesity in children continues to rise. Meet Sophia Zika. She started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the age of 11 because her mom was looking for something for her older brother to help him with his ADHD. Sophia tagged along to Jiu Jitsu classes and began to train as well.

Adults, but especially kids should not be focusing on the number on the scale, rather on being active, fueling your body with good food and having a healthy body image. Sophia has changed so much from when she started Jiu Jitsu

Sophia has been training Jiu Jitsu for a little over two years and is very close to getting her gray with black stripe belt. She is one of the most dedicated students we have at Pacific Top Team Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Corona.  In the 2 years Sophia has been training she has learned out to defend herself, have discipline in her life. better focus, more patience and has made many new friends. She loves that Jiu Jitsu keeps her healthy and active while having lots of fun.

Sophia began competing about 9 months after she had been training Jiu Jitsu. Her first competition went the way it does for may Jiu Jitsu competitors. She got taken down and stuck on bottom with a knee in belly for most of the fight. Sophia is a true champion though and she didn't let that stop her. She returned to the mats and continued training. She learned new techniques and sharpened old ones. She continued to lose weight and become more athletic. In the last 18 months she has competed in over 15 tournaments and is reaching the top of the podium almost every time.

Sophia's favorite submissions currently are the triangle and bow and arrow. You can find her training at Pacific Top Team in Corona pretty much every day. She loves to spend time on the mats and is usually one of the last students to leave the Academy!

Congratulation Sophia on your recent Gold at Dream! We all are super proud of you!
